RECAPS (OUA): McMaster tops Laurier; Blues break 4 team records; Queen’s offence explodes at Homecoming [video/stats]

HAMILTONΒ  – The No. 3 McMaster Marauders won 27-10 the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the fourth quarter.

With four field goals already today, Tyler Crapigna of Nepean, Ont. has set the CIS mark for career field goals with 83 all time. The record setting kick came with 7:54 remaining in the game on a 41-yard attempt. Β Earlier in the game he tied Sherbrooke’s William Dion (2008-2012) when he kicked an 18-yard field goal as time expired at the half. Β The record setting kick made the score 27-9 for the Marauders at the time.

Heading into the game Crapigna needed four to pass Dion and he made a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 20-yard field goal in the second quarter.

McMaster took the lead at 7:10 of the second quarter after Daniel Vandervoort of Burlington, Ont caught a 48-yard pass from Marshall Ferguson of Kingston, Ont. putting the score 13-7. Β  Β Later Ferguson connected with Dahlin Brooks of Kitchener, Ont., on a six-yard pass for the other major making the score 23-7.

Greg Nyhof of Georgetown, Ont., caught a 12-yard pass from James Fracas of Waterloo, Ont.at 10:57 of the opening quarter to put the Golden Hawks up 7-0 before Crapigna put up his first two field goals.

Laurier loses to Mac 2014

HAMILTON – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team were handed their second straight loss of the season by the McMaster Marauders as they fell 27-10 at Ron Joyce StadiumΒ on SaturdayΒ afternoon.

After the Hawks (4-3) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter, the Marauders (7-0) scored 24 straight points on the strength of quarterback Marshall Ferguson of Kingston, Ont., and running back Chris Pezzetta of Burlington, Ont., to build a lead that would prove to be insurmountable for the purple and gold.

Ferguson finished the day 23-for-33 for 264 yards and two touchdowns while Pezzetta rushed for 116 yards.

β€œA better effort definitely on defence, but offensively obviously you could see that was the thing really slowing us down,” commented head coach Michael Faulds on his team’s play. &ldq uo;Hats off to our defence, because I don’t know how many minutes they were on the field, but it was a significant amount because of how many 2-and-outs and short drives we had offensively.”

In what was a very positive start for Laurier after a tough loss to No. 4 Western a week ago, the Hawks drove the field against the defence of the No. 3 Marauders to open the game. Quarterback James Fracas of Waterloo, Ont., capped the drive with a 12-yard pass to Greg Nyhof of Georgetown, Ont., to give Laurier a 7-0 advantage.

However, from that point forward, the Hawks did very little to generate offence and the Marauders began to take over the game.

Trailing 7-3 heading into the second quarter, McMaster got the wind at their back and took advantage. A Danny Vandervoort (Barrie, Ont.) 48-yard touchdown was sandwiched between two Tyler Crapigna (Nepean, Ont.) field goals to push the Marauders in front 16-7 at the half.

The second half was not much better for t he purple and gold on offence. Laurier crossed midfield just once in the quarter and struggled to put consistent drives together.

β€œWe started off really well. The first couple touches he [James] makes a great pass to Greg Nyhof, and then we have the one mistake throwing the interception in the second quarter,” said Faulds of his offence. β€œThe one thing as a quartrback is that you have to have a really short memory. You throw a touchdown pass or an interception; you have to move on to the next play. And James didn’t do a great job bouncing back from that interception and it escalated.”

However, the defence stepped up and limited McMaster to just one score in the third, keeping the Hawks within three scores as they trailed 24-7 after three.

The Hawks struggles on offence proved to be too much on the day though as Laurier managed just three points in the fourth, off a conceded safety and a missed field goal.

Crapigna put the gam e away for McMaster midway through the final quarter with a 41-yard field goal, his 83rd as a Marauder that set a new CIS record for field goals made in a career.

Defensively, Laurier got a big effort from second year linebacker Nakas Onyeka of Brampton, Ont. Making his first career start, Onyeka had a career-high 11 tackles, including nine solo, two of which were tackles for losses. Teammate Chris Ackie of Cambridge, Ont., matched Onyeka with 11 tackles, all solo, which was also a single game career-high for the CFL draft prospect.

β€œI thought we had a really good week of practice, andΒ WednesdayΒ we probably had our best practice this year, and I think it starts and ends with that,” stated Onyeka on the play of himself and his teammates on defence. β€œWe made a few errors on both sides of the ball, including [special teams], but all of that will be improved for Guelph.”

Running back Dillon Campbell of Whitby, Ont., was the lone bright spot on o ffence for the Hawks as he rushed for 123 yards on 22 carries, the seventh time this year that he’s eclipsed the 100-yard mark. He now has 1,255 yards on the season, which is the 16th most rushing yards in one season in CIS history.

Up next for the Hawks, they close out their regular season at home against the No. 6 Guelph Gryphons (6-1). Laurier enters the final game of the year tied with Ottawa and Carleton in the standings, with two of the three teams qualifying for the fifth and sixth playoff spots.

Kickoff is set forΒ 1 p.m.Β at University Stadium.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team ended their 2014 campaign on a high note, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 61-13 on Saturday, October 18 at Varsity Centre.
Β
The game saw Toronto break four U of T single season team records. This year’s team topped the single-season record for highest net offence (3,165 – 1981), ending 2014 with 3,772 yards. U of T also broke team single-season passing records for most attempts (330), completions (205) and highest completion percentage (62.1%), all topping marks set in 1981.
Β
Fourth-year quarterback Simon Nassar went 12-for-21 for 222 yards and one major, while third-year QB Marcus Hobbs rushed three times for 38 yards and two touchdowns.
Β
Second-year running back Lukas Gavac rushed 12 times for 134 yards and two TDs, with rookie Divante Smith adding a season-high 116 rushing yards on five carries. Fifth-year fullback Dylan Howes added 13 carries for 61 yards and one touchdown, the first of his career.
Β
Fourth-year receiver Boris Isakov made three catches for 73 yards and two majors, while sophomore Llevi Noel notched four receptions for 80 yards. Joseph Willard led Toronto’s defence with 8.5 tackles and one sack in the win.
Β
Toronto kicker Eric Hewitson opened the scoring with a 32-yard field goal on the Blues first drive. The Warriors charged back down the field, capping off a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a trick play. Quarterback Jamie Cook hit Blair McKay with a lateral and he found Adam Felinczak in the end zone for the 12-yard TD reception.
Β
The Blues answered the call and, despite some penalty trouble, brought the ball back down the field to set up a 25-yard rushing touchdown from Gavac. Waterloo’s Caleb Girard kicked a 22-yard field goal as the two teams remained deadlocked at 10-10 heading into the second quarter.
Β
A nice catch from Bradfield set up a Gavac two-yard rushing major five minutes into the second quarter.
Β
On the next U of T drive, Nassar hit Noel, who streaked down the field for a 69-yard gain, which broke U of T’s team record for highest net offence in a single season. That set up a two-yard rushing major from Hobbs.
Β
After Hewitson hit his second field goal of the day, another 32-yard strike, Gavac came up with two rushes of 32 and 37 yards to set up another short TD from Hobbs. Hewitson kicked a 22-yard field goal and Toronto led 37-10 at halftime.
Β
Isakov had two touchdown receptions in the third quarter. Nassar connected a 36-yard pass with Isakov three minutes into the frame and Blues back-up quarterback Chris Jugovic hit him with a 25-yard pass with 6:25 remaining in the quarter. The Blues were up 54-10 heading into the fourth.
Β
Toronto added another major early in the fourth quarter as fifth-year fullback Dylan Howes punched it in for a one-yard TD.
Β
The Blues end their 2014 season with a 2-6 record and await their final spot in the standings following a bye week next Saturday.Β

Gaels defeat York 2014

KINGSTON – The Queen’s Gaels beat York 57-10 in front of a sold out 8,151 person Homecoming crowd in their last home game of the season in Kingston on Saturday afternoon.

In their final game in the tricolour at Richardson Stadium, fifth years Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) and Alex Carroll(Victoria) got things started for Queen’s under two minutes into the game. McPhee dropped back to pass, finding Carroll for an 84-yard score to put the Gaels ahead 7-0 early in the game.

At the end of the day, Carroll caught seven passes for over 200 yards and a career high three touchdowns. Still with a game to play, Carroll is eighth all-time at Queen’s with 46 receptions this season. McPhee went 19-33 in the game, totaling 386 yards and four touchdown passes without a single interception. Now with 53 touchdown passes in his career, McPhee moves into third in Gaels history, trailing Tom Denison’s 56 and Danny Brannagan’s 77.

Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) put the next Queen’s touchdown on the board, punching it in to score after being brought down at the three yard line.

To close out the first quarter, Matt Pendergast (Kingston, Ont.) picked off a pass to set up a Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) field goal, which gave Queen’s a 17-0 lead.

York scored their lone touchdown to start the second quarter, as Jahmari Bennett found Joey Ricottone from 17 yards out.

The Gaels had no problem responding, as Aaron Dowd (Gananoque, Ont.) blocked a punt to set up Andrews second touchdown of the afternoon from 13 yards out. With two scores, Andrews finished the game with 141 yards on the ground on 18 attempts.

Carroll got back into the action before halftime, scoring his second and third touchdowns of the game on 27 and 18 yard passes, respectively, from McPhee.

On another Wamsley field goal, the Gaels went into halftime up 43-7.

“I was especially pleased with the first half, I thought the team played well in that half,” head coach Pat Sheahan said. “There were some big plays, some big strikes and quite a few first downs at the half. The running game was going, there were some great throws and some great catches so it was going pretty much our way from start to finish.”

Doug Corby (Burlington, Ont.) scored the only major for Queen’s in the second half, and Wamsley added two more field goals and a rouge as the Gaels have now beat York in all 17 meetings.

The Gaels kept a lid on York’s offence, as the Lions only managed a single field goal in the second half to end the game with a 57-10 scoreline in favour of Queen’s.

Defensively, rookie Nelkas Kwemo (Montreal) led the Gaels with six solo tackles, including a sack and a pair of tackles for losses. Pendergast added four solo tackles, two tackles for losses, and a sack to his interception, which he returned 10 yards. Derek Wiggan (Toronto) finished up his home career with a pair of sacks on the day as well.

The offensive line stood tall for the Gaels as they did not allow much pressure to quarterback McPhee who was not sacked on the day, the group included graduating senior Marco Ciallela (Ancaster, Ont.).

Scott Noivo had 5.5 total tackles to lead York on defence.

The Gaels have Carleton on the road in their final game of 2014 next Saturday.
