OFC:Β Stampeders win pair of games on road

Two of Burlington’s four rep football Stampeders teams had a bye last week, but the other two were busy cruising to Ontario Football Conference victories on the road.

The varsity Stampeders crushed the Chatham Cougars 51-14 while the peewee Stamps defeated the Sarnia Sturgeons 46-20. The JV and bantam teams had the week off.

In Chatham, the Stamps fell behind 14-0 before scoring 51 unanswered points in a rainy game played last Saturday night.

The varsity team plays its last regular season game of the season Sunday, July 14 at Nelson Stadium against the Brantford Bisons.

The peewees snapped a two-game losing streak by overwhelming Sarnia. Josh Munoz’s 75-yard kick-off return, for his first of three touchdowns, gave Burlington momentum. Zach Ihasz also contributed three TDs and Gabriel Coulombe had a TD reception courtesy quarterback Queincy Vaughn, who was four for five.

Thanks to a strong effort by the offensive line, the backfield took advantage, with Munoz running for 180 yards, Ihasz adding 155 yards and Sito Berrio contributing 20 yards.

Matthew Morreale converted two of the four touchdowns and picked off a pass while playing defence.

Nick Gilbert, Luke DeGannes, Sean Stodulski, Jack Baranowski and Jason MacGougan were also key defensive contributors.

The peewee Stampeders end their inaugural season at Nelson Stadium Sunday at noon against the Chatham Cougars before heading to Chatham a week later to take part in the OFC Day of Champions peewee game.

In games played the previous week against the Twin Cities Predators, the varsity Stamps lost 28-2, the JV Stamps whipped T-C 63-7, the bantams won 27-8 and the peewees lost 47-15.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
