St. Thomas Aquinas player dies after collapsing on field

Gene Odulio (17) died Sunday after collapsing during a football game at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in Brampton on Friday.Β Β  He was a defensive back with the Cardinals football team and was playing in an exhibition game against Brantford when he collapsed.Β Β The school held a memorial gathering Monday morning for Odulio.

β€œThere was no major hit. It happened in the fourth quarter and he was rushed to Sunnybrook,” said Bruce Campbell, spokesman for the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board.Β Β β€œWe aren’t aware of the cause and it is being treated as accidental. It was a brain injury for sure.Β Β I didn’t know him, but I am getting a pretty good picture of him. He was an outgoing kid who loved football.”

Mourners took to Twitter on Monday after learning of Gene’s death, using the hashtags #MeanGene and #RIPGene to express their condolences
