Stampeders upset Grizzlies

Peewee Stampeders

The Burlington Peewee Stampeders held the Toronto Grizzlies to a field goal in the second half on their way to a 32-19 upset victory over the previous undefeated team Sunday.

Burlington fell behind 8-0 in the Central Ontario Minor Football League game but came back to even the score at 16 by the half. Burlington then took control when Zach Ihausz started the second half by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. With the Stamps plagued by injury, Ihausz, usually a linebacker, pulled double duty by taking over at running back on offence.

Toronto had not allowed a single point this season heading into the game. Burlington improved to 5-0.

Atom Stampeders

The Burlington atom Stampeders racked up 240 rushing yards as they won for the second straight week, downing the Toronto Grizzlies 27-6 Sunday.

Braedon Tremblay, Cedric Smith and Jake Bennett each had a touchdown for Burlington while Bennett also connected on all three of his point-after attempts.

Smith led the running attack with five carriers for 85 yards while Nick Giammichele ran five times for 71 yards. Also contributing were A.J. Kroes (44 yards) and Bennett (34 yards).

Defensively, the Stampeders allowed only 82 yards, led by Aidan Gresser, who had six solo tackles, including two for losses, and one assisted tackle. Smith also made six tackles, including one for a loss, and Jacob Wright had five and one assisted. Evan Dermott had an interception.

Burlington, now 3-2 this season, plays the Hamilton Ti-Cats Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Nelson Stadium. Admission is free.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
