Thunder shocked

OVFL: The varsity Toronto Thunder have fallen back to .500 after getting handled by a hot Niagara Spears team 56-6 last Saturday.

One week after narrowly defeating Newmarket the varsity Thunder suffered a humbling defeat at the hands of the Niagara Spears, dropping to 2-2 on the season. The team faced a number of obstacles this week with a rough week of practice stemming from the end of the high school year and a number of injuries to key players, most notably starting quarterback Brett Watson.

However Coach Thomas was unwilling to fall on excuses, saying bluntly, “Plain and simple they were the better TEAM this week.  Their players were better, their execution was better and their coaching was better and I’m sorry we didn’t give them a better game.  They deserved a better game from us.”

The Thunder defense struggled to stop a furious Spears offense, getting gashed on the ground and giving up a number of big gains through the air. On offense the team continues to struggle, tallying a mere 20 points in the team’s previous three games. Highlighting the offensive struggles, Thunder passers managed just 15 yards on three completions, and 33 yards on the ground for a total of 48 yards offense on the day.

Coach Thomas was particularly disappointed in the Thunder special teams as the unit suffered shanked kicks, a fumble, and a blocked punt in the game.

While the team recovers after the defeat they still have a chance to earn a playoff birth and must regroup before travelling to Essex this week to face a solid Ravens team.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
