Two teams undergo name change, third under consideration

Bedford Collegiate Redmen

For the second time in recent weeks, another team will be changing their nickname name.

Since 1923, all of Bedford Road Collegiate’s team have been called the Redmen.  However, the Saskatoon Public School Board recently voted to retire the name by the end of the school season.  The new name will be in place by the time school begins in the fall.

In a board report, the reason for the name change is to respect the varied points of view.  The board has not indicated how a new name and logo will be sought after for the school.

nepean eagles

This move comes after an Ontario team recently changed their name.  The Nepean Redskins of the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) decided to change their name to Eagles.  Ian Campeau filed a human rights complaint against the team due to the offensive nature of the name. Due to the public outcry, the Nepean squad succumbed to the pressure and made the move.

This past fall, President Stephen Dean issued a press release that outlined the reason for the change.

“While the ‘Redskins’ name was chosen in alliance with the Washington Redskins of the National Football League, the club understands that the current name is offensive to some, and thus divisive to our community.”

“We want to enable the players, volunteers and parents to keep focused on what we do best: provide excellent cheer and football programs; from tackle to touch to flag. This is what draws us together.”

The change is already reflected on the team’s website.  It will cost the team over $100,000 for the changeover, which be fully completed within the next few years.

Calgary’s Western Canada high school is considering dropping their current nickname of the ‘Redmen’ as well.
