Ugly win gets in done for Ironmen

In OVFL action, the Hamilton Ironmen (1-1) traveled to Brampton to take on the 0-2 Brampton Bulldogs Saturday night, under the lights at Chingcousy Park.

The Ironmen were down 13-0 going into the break after a tough 1st half where they couldn’t get much done on both sides of the ball.

The Ironmen stormed out of the gates in the 2nd half when running back Santiago Velasquez broke an 80 yard run for the major, cutting the deficit in half.

The Ironmen defense stepped up when they needed it the most. After a tough 1st half, the defense was poised to turn it around. They did just that when Ian Lawrence broke through and blocked a punt deep in the Bulldogs territory which was recovered by the Ironmen on the one yard line.

Ironmen QB Jake Marquette punched it in for Hamilton as they took their first lead of the game, 14-13.

Brampton was able to march down the field but the Ironmen defense showed once again that they were up to the task as DB Jordan Samek picked off a Brampton pass to clinch the victory for the Ironmen.  Hamilton held on for the 14 to 13 victory.

“The Character of the kids in this program was on display in that second half” Ironmen Coach Wade said. “We came out flat but they stepped up and made the plays to get the victory.”

The Ironmen were without 8 of its starters for the game against Brampton. Some were nursing injuries and others participated in the Steel City all-star game the night before.

“These kids are young but they have great character”, added Coach Wade, “We made some mistakes tonight but I’m proud of the way they competed through adversity. Character wins on the football field and character wins in life.”

The 2-1 Hamilton Ironmen take on the 2-1 Niagara Spears this Sunday at McMaster Ron Joyce Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00pm.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
