Varsity Toronto Thunder look to continue success under new coach Thomas

The varsity Toronto Thunder open their season under the direction of new head coach Sean Thomas, looking to continue the success that has defined the program in recent years. Reaching the semi finals last season only to lose to the Myers Riders, the team is hungry to challenge for the championship this season.

Coming off eight weeks of OTA’s coach Thomas is still adapting to his team and the team is adjusting to a coach who preaches a philosophical approach to the game.

Although the program is undoubtedly in a state of change there are a number of returning veterans who are expected to be difference makers this season. Β Adrien Burke, Brandon Fascione, Johnathan Graham-Kelly, Korey Greene, Romario McDonald, Sarkis Sogatlu, Brett Watson, and Furious Watt are expected to be key contributors on a talented roster for the Thunder this season.

In a year of change for the Thunder there are also a number of rookies that will be called on to play significant snaps for the Thunder. Key rookies include Desron “Dezzy” Keir, Lewis “Dreds” Lamey, Chris Larsen, Antoine Lyte-Myers, Dejuan Martin, Jhovan “Tank” McPherson, Ryan “Swole” Meagher, and Peter “Peazy” Β Nowaczek.

Coach Thomas believes the team will thrive on its overall team speed and athleticism as well as benefiting from a physical brand of football he hopes to establish in Toronto.

One game marked on the calendar is the Thunder’s meeting with cross town rivals the Metro Toronto Wildcats as both squads hope to prove themselves as the premier Toronto program.

Coach Thomas expects a playoff birth for the team, but stresses that a trip to the title game would only materialize if the team earns it over the course of the season. With a new regime in place and a high turnover of players, this year will certainly mark a new beginning of sorts for the Thunder as they seek to capture their third OVFL championship in five years.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
