Week 2 NXT LVL Friday Night Football Recap

Week 2 of the NXT LVL Friday Night League did not disappoint. There were great games, great plays and two new teams in the Junior Varsity Division made their debuts. There were a total of 9 games on the schedule Friday night and there was a definite buzz about some of the matchups slated for the Varsity Division. In the Junior Varsity division, the two new teams were set to make their highly anticipated debuts, with the The Late Arrivals facing the Wolverines and Chicks with Picks taking the field against the Badgers.

Player of the Week (Varsity Division)

The youngest QB in the Varsity division, 24’ QB Cohen Carter continued to light up the stat sheet by tossing another 8 touchdowns to 7 different receivers on Friday night. Probably the QB’s most impressive play of the night was actually on defence. The QB made a tremendous one handed interception in the endzone that helped The Young Lions take home the win.

Player of the Week (Junior Varsity Division)

24’ WR Michael Henneberry was on his game Friday night, hauling in 3 touchdown passes and leading the juggernaut No Excuses to another big win. Henneberry was all over the field Friday night, making catch after catch and playing lockdown defence. Henneberry is truly electric when he has the ball in his hands and is one to watch in the Junior Varsity Division.

Varsity RoundUp

The night began with the highly anticipated matchup between some of the best players in high school football as The Black Flags took on The Plum Squad. The Black Flags led by 21’ QB Will Chisholm and 22’ DB Alex Macdonald dominated on Friday night by taking down The Plum Squad 49-14. 22’ DB Alex Macdonald, who is known for his aggressive style on the gridiron showed why he is one of the best DB prospects around by accounting for 3 touchdowns. Macdonald had one of the top plays of the night by delivering a pick six from his own endzone. 21’ WR/RB Jeremiah Parker also had a big night for The Black Flags, accounting for 3 touchdowns.

Next up were two high powered offenses, when The Young Lions took on Flight in a matchup featuring two young and up and coming QB’s in 23’ Dante Gabrielli and 24’ Cohen Carter. The matchup proved to be an entertaining one as the teams went back and forth throughout the game. 22’ WR/RB Cameron Hunt continued to impress as he hauled in 4 touchdowns on the night. 23’ Dante Gabrielli tossed 7 touchdowns and had a beautiful TD connection with 23’ WR Jonathan Seeton to close out the first half. The Lions had a true team effort as 7 receivers contributed to the scoring, with 21’ WR/DB Austin Walker and 23’ WR Tristan Young making clutch grabs and 23’ WR Chris Horwood taking the top off of the defence with a nice long TD grab. 23’ WR/RB Noah Banks sealed the 55-49 win for the Lions, intercepting the hail mary to end the game.

Keandre Jollimore

The Spider Pigs bounced back from last week’s defeat by taking down the Knights 35-21. The Pigs were led by 21’ QB Oscar Rodney who was on the mark this week by tossing 5

touchdown passes. Rodney was often looking for his favourite target 21’ WR Kye Swansburg who hauled in 2 scores. The Knights were able to keep the game close for the most part, as they were led by consistent 22’ QB Sidney Riutta. Riutta tossed 3 touchdowns on the night and hooked up with WR Daniel Matheson for 2 of those scores.

Big Truss was looking to get in the win column when they took on the upstart Gators. The first half was a close affair, as 21’ QB Luke Bezanson and 23’ QB Dylan Clarke went back and forth score for score. Big Truss started to pull away in the second half of the game, when big time players such as 21’ WR Kwame Franklin, 21’ DB Keandre Jollimore and 23’ WR Nate Slawter began to impose their will on the Gators. 23’ WR Nate Slawter showed why he is one of the top young prospects in the province, as he made 2 highlight reel touchdown catches and added an interception. The Gators had several players in the scoring mix with 4 different receivers scoring on the night, but ultimately it wasn’t enough as the Gators fell to Big Truss 48-26.

The last game of the night featured the Spider Pigs back on the field taking on The Shorty’s. It was a back and forth game, with the Spider Pigs taking the win 35-32. The Spider Pigs were led by 21’ WR Kye Swansburg and 21’ DB Tyler Macdonald who both accounted for 2 scores each. The Shorty’s played catch up most of the night, but did not quit and just ran out of time. 23’ QB Ryan Clarke consistently connected with 24’ WR Alex Cyr on the night, as the two hooked up for 2 touchdowns and Cyr added a clutch interception that kept The Shorty’s in the game.

Junior Varsity

The Eagles began the night by getting into the win column, by defeating the Hawks 22-6. 25’ QB Landon Tomlin threw for 3 touchdowns on the night and showed poise in the pocket by finding the open receiver on a regular basis. 24’ WR/DB Sam Eckler-Evans had the catch of the night, when he “Mossed” his opponent; securing the Hawks only score of the evening.

No Excuses continued their dominance in the JV Division by defeating The Misfits 46-0. No Excuses were led by 24’ WR Michael Henneberry who accounted for 3 touchdowns and 24’ QB Gian Abdi who tossed 5 touchdown passes on the night. No Excuses has yet to give up a point in two games and it will be interesting to see if anyone can stop the No Excuses train.

Newcomers, The Late Arrivals made their debut on Friday Night and they did not disappoint. The Late Arrivals took on the Wolverines in an entertaining contest. The Late arrivals had a balanced attack, running and passing the ball. QB Layson Johnson threw for 3 scores and The Late Arrivals went unconventional by running for 2 additional scores. The Wolverines received some great play from 23’ TE Fynn Houston who made two nice long grabs and scored a touchdown. The Late Arrivals went on to win the contest 30-12.

The last game of the night featured newcomers, Chicks with Picks and the defensive minded Badgers squad. The Badgers fought hard in the game keeping the Chicks off of the board until late in the second half. The Chicks were able to secure the win with a late touchdown connection between QB Kaira Boudrealt and WR Malaya Douglas. The Chicks downed the Badgers 9-0.
