Whitby, Ontario – “If your child has interest in football, the Whitby Lions Football Club is where it’s at” according to Shannon Brown, mother of three players in the club’s spring flag football program that officially launched on May 5 and runs every Sunday to the end of June at the Optimist Park in Brooklin.
“Football is not just for boys” adds Shannon, whose two daughters and son play on the same team in the Whitby Lions Junior Division. “It’s not very often we get all three kids playing one sport, on the same day, at the same time, at the same location.”
According to Emma Phillips, president of the Whitby Lions Football Club “our program started as an idea to help get more boys and girls interested in the sport of football and more physically active. As the only non-contact football program in Durham Region focussed on youth, our goal is to introduce children and their parents to the sport, teach them the fundamentals and have them catch the football bug!”
“Even though this is our first season on the field, we are looking forward to many many more with the kids; we believe that this non-contact sport is here to stay” says director of football operations, Paul DaSilva. “Our flag football program is committed to ensuring all players, regardless of size, skill or ability, have meaningful participation in every game and compete in an environment that teaches the lifelong skills of leadership, teamwork and good sportsmanship”
Dominic Ionadi, father of a first time player adds “I’m so excited to see such a well-organized, outstanding flag football program in Whitby. The WLFC have done a tremendous job in developing a top-notch program where boys and girls can learn the fundamentals, get a great workout, develop a passion for the sport and, above all, have tons of fun in the process!”
