OVFL JV: Wildcats bowl over Bucs

The Junior Varsity Metro Toronto Wildcats are now one step closer to a home playoff game as they defeated the Newmarket Bucs 30-15 last Saturday.

Running back Mekhi Hyman had the best game among running backs in the Ontario Varsity Football League with 143 total yards and two touchdowns.

“He has been our best running back,” Says head coach Ed Babin. “However, he has been only able to play two games because of injury.”

Coach Babin is quick to point out that the Wildcats have many offensive weapons including quarterback Jack Vernon who has, “Excellent speed and running ability as well.” This upcoming week will also see the return of running back Jordan Burgher who has not played yet this season.

The Wildcats were forced to play more of a running game because the Buc’s defense was prepared for Jack Vernon’s strong throwing arm. “We try to play with a mixture of throwing and running,” Says Babin.

Defensively, the Wildcats played very well, slowing down the Newmarket offense. Luc Babin led the team in tackles with 12 and Deshawn Stevens had an interception and returned it for a touchdown.

This Saturday the Wildcats will take on the London Mustangs at home. The Mustangs sit only one spot behind the Wildcats in the standings and boast the same record. “As a team, they play a different style than we do,” Says Babin. “They have a different defensive system and tend to run the ball a lot more. We should be successful as long as we are prepared and stop their run game.”

Coach Babin and the Wildcats take on the Mustangs at 2:30PM at Ester Shiner Stadium.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
