When I heard that the Cégep de Victoriaville had hired Richard Savoie, my first thoughts were that the school was looking for a return to their football glory years. They possess a most impressive history in the game.

  1. Les Vulkins were amongst the 1st Francophone schools to start a Cégep football program and they developed a very competitive team.
  2. Their 1st coach Yvon Paré was a true Québec coaching pioneer, Yvon and his brother Jean-Guy (Cégep Trois-Rivières), were during the 1970s Québec’s best known and most successful Franco coaches. To honor his achievements, the Victoriaville Football Stadium is named “le Stade Yvon Paré”
  3. When Savoie played for Les Vulkins, they competed in the top Cégep division

Now for a little of Richard Savoie’s football background –

  1. Post an excellent Victoriaville career – he was an outstanding defensive lineman and leader for Acadia University, from 1995 to 1998.
  2. Savoie became the 1st head coach for Cégep Lévis-Lauzon. During his 12 year tenure with Les Faucons, he took a division 3 program and helped elevate them to division 2 and ultimately to division 1!
  3. He was also responsible for the establishment of a new and successful high school program at a small private high school in Victoriaville – Collège Clarétain

Shortly after his hiring in late October, I called Richard to congratulate him on his new position – assistant Director of Athletics. While initially, football was not listed amongst his responsibilities, I chided him that it was impossible for him to not coach – football being in his DNA.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
