WOLFE: The Discovery/Salvation of 9 Man Football

I have previously written concerning the potential benefits of “reduced-player football”. At that time my comments were based upon the knowledge of several coaches who had experience in the “9 player game”; in other words, my judgement was theoretic, not based on personal experience.

That has now changed, as I am currently coaching 9-man football. This is my 3rd season coaching at Lower Canada College (LCC), a Montreal private school. LCC has a long and proud football tradition, football has been played there for 110 years.

The number of athletes, interested in football, has been declining for several years and Athletic Director Chris Viau was forced to cancel, at least for this season, the Senior team. He further decided to enter our Midget (Cadet in Quebec – grade 8 & 9 players) team in a 9 vs 9 league. Furthermore, our freshmen now play flag football.
