CFC50 Rankings Week 6: Pandemonium as two more top 10 programs falter

There’s never a dull moment in the Canadian high school football world, and this past week lived up to our expectations.

We begin this week in Quebec with a result nobody saw coming as Academie Saint-Louis showed no fear against Seminaire Saint-Francois, who came into the game ranked fourth in the nation. The Blizzard were rolling to start the season with four blowout victories, but they hit a speedbump this week as the Arsenal ran away with a 22-4 victory. The road doesn’t get any easier for Saint-Francois this week, but they also have a golden chance to redeem themselves with a massive matchup against top ten ranked Charles-Lemoyne. Meanwhile, Acadamie Saint-Louis will be looking to prove their recent run of success has been no fluke with a tough clash against Armand-Corbeil on the horizon, who’ve climbed onto the CFC50 Rankings winning four straight after starting the season 0-2.

We nearly had a new king with the number one ranked program Huron Heights continuing their barnstorming schedule with a tough matchup against St. Roch in Ontario. They were originally slated to take on St. Andrew’s College, but unfortunately the Saints had to bow out due to sickness running through the locker room. It didn’t take long for St. Roch to seize the opportunity, and at halftime it looked like they might pull off the upset with the scoreboard reading 3-0 in the Ravens favour. As they’ve proven time and time again, the Warriors weren’t going to crumble under the pressure and managed to overcome St. Roch’s stout defence to pull out a slim 10-3 victory.

Elsewhere in Ontario we had a shocking result in Sault Ste. Marie where St. Mary’s were able to get the best of Korah by a score of 15-14. Even with the loss, the Colts have secured their fifth straight league title, and know they will need to up their game come playoff time with some contenders in Northern Ontario looking to end their OFSAA streak. It’s a fantastic result for St. Mary’s, who will look to close out their regular season play with a 3-1 record, and will be looking for a repeat performance if they are able to meet Korah in the playoffs.

Heading to Hamilton, two upsets in a row weren’t in the cards for Bishop Ryan, who fought to the bitter end against their rivals from Newman eventually falling 18-7. We now look ahead to the highly anticipated matchup between Newman and St. Thomas More, with the Knights looking to prove a point after dropping their first regular season loss in six years to Bishop Ryan a couple weeks ago. It’s been a long time since the Cardinals tasted victory against their rivals, but you never know what the outcome will be when these two meet on the field.

We round out our Ontario coverage with a pair of ranked programs falling off the list to make way for some new blood. Overtime would be too much to overcome for St. Mark in Ottawa, who dropped their first loss of the season against Holy Trinity Catholic by a score of 26-21. There’s a few contenders for the top dog in Ottawa this year, but we’ve given the nod to St. Matthew for now, who have been dominant in their first two contests outscoring their opponents 87-0. Meanwhile in Guelph, it was Bishop Macdonell making their first appearance on the rankings after a nail-biting 21-20 victory over reigning champions St. James.

We head to Alberta where there was a clash of the titans in Calgary between perennial contenders Notre Dame and St. Francis. This is a matchup that’s gone back and forth throughout the years, and this time around it was Notre Dame who got the last laugh with a convincing 41-27 over their city rivals. The Pride now join the exclusive top ten club, but their eyes will be set on finishing the job in November whether it’s Harry Ainlay, Salisbury or St. Francis standing in their way of provincial glory. They still have one big regular season matchup against Ernest Manning, who could be the dark horse in Alberta this season, but they’ll need to take their game to an elite level with St. Francis and Notre Dame left on the schedule before playoff time.

CFC100 CLASS OF 2024 RANKINGS

There were no surprises out of Regina this week with Miller still holding onto the top seed, but they might have got a better idea about who they can expect to appear out of Saskatoon come playoff time. It’s always a hard-fought battle when Holy Cross and St. Joseph meet on the field, and the Guardians wouldn’t be denied this time around defeating their rivals by a score of 28-16. They shouldn’t run into anymore issues until playoff time, where it’s highly likely they’ll have to deal with Holy Cross one more time if they want a chance to claim provincial supremacy against the winners out of Regina.

We finish off in BC, where another top ten program survived by the skin of their teeth as South Delta nearly pulled off the storybook finish against Vancouver College, who had to rely on their defence to get the job done in a 7-0 shutout. It’s proof of how competitive the BC high school scene can be any given week, and we had a great example to follow with Carson Graham taking down Notre Dame by a score of 36-27. This is a statement win for Carson Graham, who are competing at the AAA Varsity level this year after taking home the AA Varsity championship in a thrilling overtime game against CFC25 Robert Bateman last season. Throw all the names in a hat, because there’s a handful of programs who might might raise the provincial banner in 2022.
