Job Description:

Located in beautiful Burnaby, British Columbia, 6 miles from Vancouver, Simon Fraser University (SFU) has a rich football tradition since its inception in 1965. Over the years, 144 football alumni have been drafted to the Canadian Football league and SFU is the only international university in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (competing at the Div II level). SFU is world renowned for academic excellence and ranks first among comprehensive universities in Canada. Additionally, plans are moving forward for the construction of a new football stadium as part of a student driven $70 million Build SFU initiative. Under the general supervision of the Senior Director Athletics, the Head Coach of Football will be highly motivated, display effective and positive leadership, and will have superior supervision skills in directing and maintaining a successful and competitive football program at Simon Fraser University.

Duties and Responsibilities

In consultation with the Senior Director of Athletics, establish the goals, objectives, performance indicators, and team culture of the football program.

Football Program Management & Administration:

β€’ Lead a highly competitive football program by adhering to university and NCAA policies and regulations
β€’ Monitor the national, provincial, club and school systems to keep appraised of program trends, prospects, and recruit talented student-athletes
β€’ Develop and implement an annual operating plan as well as a rolling five year strategic plan
β€’ Prepare the annual operating budget and monitor the budget on a monthly and quarterly basis β€’ Ensure the appropriate preparation of financial expenditure requests and approve all expenditure requests related to the program
β€’ Recommend to the Senior Director Athletics annually the names of football student athlete recipients for scholarship and awards
β€’ Recruit and supervise the program’s coaching support personnel and establish contractual agreements
β€’ Coordinate all facility scheduling including but not limited to meetings, competitions, practice, and clinics
β€’ Coordinate all logistical requirements for team travel
β€’ Plan, schedule and oversee seasonal youth camps
β€’ Performs other duties as assigned

General:

β€’ Establish and maintain a positive team culture β€’ Design, monitor and support student-athletes’ personal development programs and progress with respect to their athletic and community citizenship
β€’ Direct, design, implement, and review on an ongoing basis the high performance team training program (e.g. technical, tactical, physiological, sport science research and application, etc.)
β€’ Support student-athlete’s academic progress in conjunction with available programs and resources (e.g. Academics First)
β€’ Monitor the student-athletes’ support personnel, and the program’s performances to ensure their compliance with all team, departmental, university, and GNAC and NCAA policies, rules and regulations

β€’ Develop practice schedules, teach fundamental skills and properly train and condition student athletes in preparation for contests
β€’ Develop and implement personal training program in conjunction with strength and conditioning personnel to ensure the team’s competitive success for student-athletes and for the team personnel
β€’ Orient and educate team members with respect to the team, department, university and competitive leagues’ culture, team standards and expectations, policies, procedures and regulations
β€’ Attend instructional clinics to remain up to date in coaching skills and methodology Community Outreach:
β€’ Nurture the program’s alumni and cultivate internal and external relationships to develop initiatives to enhance the endowment growth through donations
β€’ Develop, organize, and coordinate initiatives to enhance the program’s operating and student-athlete financial assistance budgets and endowments
β€’ Promotes program and university initiatives (Gathering of the Clan Breakfast, etc.)

Requirements

β€’ Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
β€’ Minimum of 5 years coaching experience with high performance athletes aged 16 years and over (i.e. Provincial, National, University/College) with an excellent win/loss record (or an equivalent combination of education and training experience)
β€’ Canadian National Coaching Certification Program – Level III or equivalent, with demonstrated knowledge and analysis of Football skill development and excellent instructional ability
β€’ Possess high levels of integrity
β€’ Proven role model with peers, athletes and assistant coaches
β€’ Knowledge of and commitment to NCAA rules and regulations
β€’ Excellent organizational, fiscal management and interpersonal skills
β€’ Excellent communication skills
β€’ Effective leadership, supervisory and motivational skills
β€’ Valid Driver’s license
β€’ Current Emergency or Standard First Aid training
β€’ Willing to undergo a provincial criminal record check The incumbent is a public representative of the program and represents the University and Athletics in both Canada and the United States acting as an ambassador of Simon Fraser University by representing it in a positive manner to the media, general public, national-provincial club system, school system, intercollegiate conference, alumni, etc. Extensive travel is an integral part of the position as is being responsible for team student-athletes and personnel on out of town travel of up to two weeks or more. Hours required to perform the duties and responsibilities effectively include a large number of evening and weekend hours for student-athlete training, competition, and recruiting.
This position is responsible for abiding with all institutional and affiliated athletic association policies, rules and regulations concerning recruitment, financial aid, and student-athlete eligibility.
