York Simcoe Bucs are celebrating theirΒ inaugural Football Day in York Region Sunday at Ray Twinney Complex in Newmarket to showcase itself to the public. Β Representatives of the Grey Cup-champion Toronto Argonauts and their cheerleaders will participate throughout the afternoon.
βWe just want to have a fun day and get people to come and enjoy and let them know there is competitive football in York Region right up to the (Canadian university level),β saidΒ York Simcoe Minor Football Association president Jude Scott, who is in his second year as club president. βIβve had people coming up to me saying theyβve just found out and can they still register.β
βWe should be piggybacking on the successes of high school programs,β said Scott, pointing to Huron Heightsβ Metro Bowl triumph in 2013. βIf you donβt grab the moment, itβs dead. We have to get people to understand there is football out there.β
A tripleheader of Ontario Varsity Football League games featuring Bucs teams ranging from bantam to varsity levels.
The bantam and junior varsity teams kick off action against the London Mustangs at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively. Β The varsity Bucs face the Cornwall Wildcats at 4 p.m.
