OVFL & OFC Week 2 (JV) recaps: Thriller in the Shiner

Week 2 action has completed in both the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and the Ontario Football Conference (OFC).

The highlight of this past weekend in the OVFL was a thriller which saw the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins edge the Metro-Toronto Wildcats for the victory.

Week 2 OVFL winners include Hamilton Ironmen, Cumberland Panthers, Ottawa Myers Riders, Essex Ravens, Scarborough Thunder, London Jr Mustangs and Cambridge Lions. After this past weekend, seven teams remain undefeated – Myers Riders, Lions, Panthers, Ironmen, and Thunder all have 2-0 records so far this season.

In the OFC, many games showcased offensive explosions by winning teams.Β  Among the Week 2 victors include Forest-City Thunderbirds, Oakville Titans, Guelph Bears, Clarington Knights, Hamilton Hurricanes, Burlington Stampeders, Peterborough Wolverines and North Halton Crimson Tide. Five teams remain undefeated after this past weekend’s action – Stampeders, Hurricanes, Bears Wolverines and Crimson Tide each sport 2-0 records.

ONTARIO VARSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (OVFL):

Ironmen-On-Black2

HAMILTON IRONMEN 28, ETOICOKE EAGLES 14:

At Father Henry Carr Catholic School, Alexander DiPietro completed 15 passes in 22 attempts for 237 passing yards and three touchdowns as the Hamilton Ironmen defeated the Etobicoke Eagles 28-14.

Isaiah Joseph tallied a major and rushed for 131 yards on 16 carries in the victory.Β  Kieran Gargarello scored a touchdown and racked up 85 yards on four receptions (average of 21.2 yards per reception).

David Benedetti added a 28 yards field goal and five PAT’s

On defense, Joe O’Brien led the way with four solo and three assisted tackles.Β  He also caught three interceptions and caught a sack for the Ironmen.

As for the Eagles, DeJuan Williams had a 95 yard touchdown reception in the loss.

Cumberland Panthers

CUMBERLAND PANTHERS 41, KINGSTON GRENADIERS 14:

At LCVI, Nick Renaud scored two touchdowns and had 105 yards on six receptions as the Cumberland Panthers cruised to a 41-14 win over the Kingston Grenadiers.

Jamal Mivinga tallied a major and racked up 115 yards on 6 carries (average of 19.2 yards per reception). Pivot Pascal Lapensee completed 16 passes in 22 attempts for 235 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Shubham Nayyar was a beast on the Panthers defense as he registered 27 solo and six assisted tackles

As for the Grenadiers, Nikolas Danielle was successful on two conversion attempts.

OTTAWA MYERS RIDERS 58, MARKHAM RAIDERS 0:

At Minto Field, the Ottawa Myers Riders earned a 58-0 shutout victory over the Markham Raiders.

AJ Oickle scored a touchdown and rushed for 155 yards on 10 carries (average of 15 yards per carry).Β  Moreover, Jean-Paul Cimankinda tallied a major and rushed for 120 yards on 12 carries. Jalla Lansanah racked up 105 rushing yards on five carries (average of 21 yards per carry).

Owen Clement added a 23 yard field goal and seven PAT’s in the win.

On defense, Ross Polito led the way with nine solo and one assisted tackle.

Essex Ravens

ESSEX RAVENS 76, SSM SABRECATS 14:

At Villanova High School, the Essex Ravens experienced an offensive explosion as the team crushed the SSM Sabrecats 76-14.

Matthew Pickens tallied five majors (four rushing, one receiving), amassed 287 rushing yards on 14 carries (average of 20.5 yards per carry) and 69 yards on two receptions (average of 34.5 yards per reception).

Pivot Colton Allen completed 12 passes in 17 attempts for 211 passing yards and five touchdowns.

As for the Sabrecats, Jarett Litalien scored a touchdown and racked up 70 yards on seven receptions.Β  Dalton Toppan had 95 yards on five receptions (average of 19 yards per reception).

Ryan Yost completed 18 passes in 34 attempts for 230 passing yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Michael Reid led the Sabrecats defense with 10 solo and two assisted tackles.

JV Toronto Thunder

SCARBOROUGH THUNDER 54, OSHAWA HAWKEYES 3:

At Oshawa Civic Stadium, Daniel Adeboboye scored two touchdowns and rushed to 121 yards on nine carries as the Scarborough Thunder coasted to a 54-3 win over the Oshawa Hawkeyes.

Thomas Wilson added six PAT’s for the Thunder.

Jaeden Washington led the defense as he registered seven solo and five assisted tackles.

Anthony Dantas got the Hawkeyes on the scoreboard with a 22 yard field goal.

AJAX PICKERING DOLPHINS 22, METRO TORONTO WILDCATS 21:

At Esther Shriner Stadium, the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins edged the Metro Toronto Wildcats in a thriller, 22-21.

Daniel Davy rushed for 114 yards on seven carries.Β  Pivot Justin Aliberti completed eight passes in 17 attempts for 129 passing yards and two touchdowns. Robert Carmichael added three PAT’s for the Dolphins.

As for the Wildcats, Mekhi Hyamn scored two touchdowns and rushed for 130 yards on 18 carries.Β  Esson Hamiltn also added a major and had 126 yards on six receptions (average of 21 yards per reception). Gavin Fox completed 12 passes in 19 attempts for 227 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Jesse Amaral led the Wildcats defense with eight solo and eight assisted tackles in the loss.

LDN JR Mustangs

LONDON JR MUSTANGS 65, HALTON COWBOYS 12:

At Jean Vanier Catholic High School, Juquon Uylett tallied two major and rushed for 157 yards on 13 carries as the London Jr. Mustangs crushed the Halton Cowboys 65-12.

Thomas Hawkins also scored a touchdown and amassed 175 yards on six receptions for the Mustangs.Β  Ben Schmidt completed nine passes in 12 attempts for 230 passing yards and two touchdowns. William Upfold added seven PAT’s.

As for the Cowboys, Marcus Colangelo registered 11 solo and three assisted tackles.

MISSISSAUGA WARRIORS 27, NIAGARA SPEARS 0:

At Loyola Catholic Secondary School, the Mississauga Warriors earned a shutout victory over the Niagara Spears 27-0.

Khalil Wilson caught two interceptions and converted them both into touchdowns.Β  He also registered two solo and five assisted tackles.

Alexander Lavric completed 13 passes in 20 attempts for 147 passing yards and a touchdown for the Warriors.

Justinkyle Jodhan had five solo and nine assisted tackles for the victors.

CAMBRIDGE LIONS 34, BRAMPTON BULLDOGS 21:

At Chingcousy Park, Lam Gordon tallied two majors and racked up 145 yards on four receptions (average of 36.2 yards per reception) as the Cambridge Lions came away with a 34-21 win over the Brampton Bulldogs.

Jackson White completed 12 passes in 19 attempts for 227 yards and three touchdowns for the victors.Β  Nathan McLean added a 36 yard field goal and four PAT’s.

Ben Drummond led the Lions defense with seven solo and 12 assisted tackles as well as recording a sack.

As for the Bulldogs, Jevante Stanley scored a touchdown and rushed for 116 yards on 16 carries. Juwan Jesquith was successful on a conversion attempt.

ONTARIO FOOTBALL CONFERENCE (OFC):

Forest City

FOREST CITY THUNDERBIRDS 18, CHATHAM-KENT COUGARS 6:

Kelton Evans completed 10 passes in 25 attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown pass to Jake Anderson as well 14 rushing yards for the Thunderbirds.

Jake Anderson has two catches for 105 yards and a touchdown while Clay Shreve also had two catches for 20 yards.Β  Desi Rush had five catches for 31 yards while Jermaine Caldwell seven rushes for 67 yards while only playing sparingly.Β Β  Ian Pepper has six rushes for 14 yards and Spencer Mason added a 10 yard rush and a nine yard reception in the loss.

Eric Penney had an amazing game on defensive with eight tackles, caught an interception and a fumble recovery while also returning punts totalling 41 yards.Β  Quentin Forgie who played quite sparingly had eight tackles.Β  David Nethersole, Ethan Baylis, Nolan Hakr and Desi Rush all had five tackles a piece.Β  Alex Formosa and Ricky O’Rourke had six tackles a piece and O’Rourke a sack Griffin Peltier had three tackles and a forced fumble in the loss.

“It was a tough game,” commented Coach Pugh on the loss. β€œWe were very rusty due to not having much of an opportunity to practice full out as a team as we are respecting the boys’ junior high school seasons.”

β€œWe will be all hands on deck by the end of the week and expect the team to meld together quickly.”

Huronia Stallions Week 2 2014

 

CLARINGTON KNIGHTS 44, HURONIA STALLIONS 10:

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity Team fell to 1-1 on the season with a 41-10 loss to the Clarington Knights.Β  The Stallions played the Knights even for most of the first half with the highlight being a 51 yard touchdown connection between Quarterback Josh Cook and Wide Receiver Jacob Tanguay.Β  This gave the Stallions a 7-6 lead with less than a minute left in the half.Β  After a 15 yard penalty for excessive celebration, Clarington returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to lead 13-7 at the half.Β  Both defences played tough in the third quarter with Clarington ahead at the beginning of the fourth by a 20-10 score.Β  Clarington then seized control of the momentum sending the Stallions to their first defeat of the season.
