Simon Fraser Clan coordinator Beck hired by BYU

Provo, UT – After one season as the offensive coordinator for the Simon Fraser University football team, Jason Beck is returning to his alma mater to be the quarterbacks coach for the Brigham Young University Cougars.

“We are extremely honoured that one of America’s finest academic institutions has invited our offensive coordinator and BYU alumnus Jason Beck to become a member of their football coaching staff,” said Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation Milton Richards. “We are grateful to Jason for making our offence one of the best in the nation and wish him and his family all the best. He will be missed.”

Beck was a Cougar from 2004-06 when he served as a backup to All-American quarterback John Beck.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to come back here and coach at BYU,” said Beck. “I know this opportunity is a result of the success we had at Simon Fraser last season and I’m very grateful to the players, coaches and other members of the program.”

He came to SFU after a three year stint as the quarterbacks coach at Weber State University in Ogden, UT where, under his guidance, quarterback Cameron Higgins set several school records.

“I’ve already received a lot of messages from players and other people at SFU congratulating me and wishing me and my family well. That means a lot and I appreciate the support. It’s exciting to return to my alma mater and I’ll certainly miss all the great relationships that were developed over the last year at SFU,” finished Beck.

Clan Head Coach Dave Johnson brought Beck on board to lead the Clan’s offence last spring and the results were impressive.

This past season, the SFU offence was the top ranked scoring and passing offence in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

“We are thankful for the contribution he made to the SFU football program and we wish him the very best as he moves forward in his career at BYU,” said coach Johnson. “Jason did a tremendous job with a talented group and he has helped make our offence stronger for the upcoming season as well.”

Four Clan players were in the top 10 in the conference in all-purpose yards (Bo Palmer, Lemar Durant, Bobby Pospischil and Earl Anderson) and three were in the top 10 in scoring (Durant, Palmer and Jamal Kett).

Durant and Kett also finished first and second in the conference in receiving touchdowns.

In addition to playing at BYU, Beck was a graduate assistant coach there after his playing career and went on to take a graduate assistant coaching position with the Louisiana State University Tigers before moving on the Weber State.
