OVFL:Β  Varsity-Thunder roll past Cumberland Panthers in opener.

The Toronto varsity Thunder team pitched a shutout in a decisive 20-0 victory over the Cumberland Panthers on Sunday.

After earning their first victory of the season, and the first for Coach Sean Thomas as head coach in Toronto, the reaction was one of relief.

“Phew,” declared Thomas.Β  “Finally, I can get some uninterrupted sleep for more than 4-hours.”

The hard work seems to be paying off as there were numerous bring spots on an overhauled roster. Leading the way in the shutout was linebacker Furious Watt. Living up to his name Watt was all over the field on Sunday recording 14 tackles (10 assisted, 4 solo), half a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception from his linebacker spot. In addition Watt also contributed on specials handling punt and kickoff duty. Other notable players on defensive included Matthew Vieira with four tackles (2 assisted, 2 solo), two batted balls, a forced fumble, and an interception, as well as lineman Jonathan Graham-Kelly who recorded nine tackles (8 assisted, 1 solo), and one and a half sacks.

Returning quarterback Brett Watson had a good game as the Thunder pivot connected on 10 of his 21 attempts for 231 yards and two touchdowns while surrendering one interception. Both scores were caught by receiver Dejuan Martin as he went off with six receptions for 145 yards and the two scores. Ryan Meagher was also a factor with 44 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.

The work never ends for coach Thomas.

“Now I have to go home and break down the Cumberland film and then start breaking down the Kingston film…my wife is gonna kill me,” explained Thomas.

The varsity Thunder host the Kingston Grenadiers at George Vanier Secondary this Saturday, kickoff is 2 pm.
