- We are happy to report that we can finally write high school football is back in Alberta. A lot of games were missed unfortunately, but thankfully there is still enough time left in the season that we will be able to crown provincial champions across the province. With the long pause, we are expecting every program to react differently to the layoff, which means we should be in for a thrilling month of football with zero wiggle room for error. The action kicks off this week with Harry Ainlay putting their Edmonton Metro title on the line against Salisbury, who may have tumbled down the rankings after their last loss to Holy Trinity Academy, but it’s easy to forget after the hiatus that the Sabres showed no fear in the first contest between these two with the Titans coming away with a 20-10 victory. On the other side of the province, Calgary will be holding semifinal showdowns with Notre Dame preparing for their first matchup this year against their rivals St. Francis, who will be hoping that the long break let them shake off their devastating 32-0 loss at the hands of Ernest Manning, and will be ready to compete with their backs against the wall. On the flip side, Ernest Manning will get back on the field against Bishop Carroll in the other semifinal. The last matchup featuring CFC50 programs will be a classic rivalry game between Raymond and Lethbridge CI, who will be putting it all on the line in the 5A Prairie Sky League finals.

- Saskatoon is green. Regina is blue. Now the only question left is what colour will the kings of Saskatchewan football be wearing next week? You couldn’t have asked for a better championship week with Holy Cross fighting tooth and nail to pry the Saskatoon city title out of the hands of St. Joseph in a 20-15 triumph. It’s even more special when you think about all the players last year who let the 2024 trophy slip through their hands, but they would not be denied this time around, and will now have a special opportunity to become the chosen ones who finally brings home the first 6A provincial championship to Holy Cross since 1995 after nine other iterations of the Crusaders have failed the mission. That’s going to be a lot easier said than done with Miller waiting on the other sideline after they were able to squeeze past Riffel in a hard fought 36-27 game to tally their fifth Regina city title since 2018. The Marauders have been victorious in their last four trips to the 5A provincial finals including two against Holy Cross, but we do have one common opponent we can look to for some sense of who might be the favourite in this championship tussle. Of course that team is St. Joseph, who dropped both their games to Holy Cross this season, but did manage to defeat Miller by a score of 37-25 way back in week two. Is that any indicator of what the future may hold? You’ll just have to wait to find out.

- It was a wild ride through Winnipeg this year, but it was always going to end this way wasn’t it? We’ve got a championship rematch for the ages in the AAAA WHSFL finals with Dakota putting their title on the line against Oak Park for the second year in a row. These two took very different paths to get back to the championship game with Dakota grinding out a tough 8-3 victory over St. Paul’s in the semifinals, while Oak Park were in cruise control with a convincing 46-6 win over Vincent Massey on the other side of the bracket. And yes, we are well aware that Oak Park defeated Dakota earlier in the season 11-3 in an all-out defensive battle, but they’re going to need to prove they can do it again when all the chips are pushed to the middle of the table to finally leap frog the Lancers in the rankings for good. This one is going to be gritty. It’s going to be nasty. It’s going to push every player and coach to their limits. And we can’t wait to see who ends up on top. Will the Raiders be celebrating their first provincial banner since 2014? Or will Dakota hold onto the crown for the third straight year? Either way, it’s going to be a magical night at Princess Auto Stadium.

CFC100 CLASS 2026 RANKINGS
- The first round of the playoffs are complete in Quebec, and now we’ve got just four programs left standing with starry eyes about raising the Bol d’Or. Charles-Lemoyne got the job done against College Notre-Dame with a breezy 39-8 victory over the Cactus, while on the other side of the bracket Saint-Francois were able to dig deep to secure a 15-13 victory to send Saint-Louis packing. This now sets up a match-up between Saint-Jean-Eudes coming off the bye against Saint-Francois, which on paper should look like a formality with the Condors handing the Blizzard a 27-7 loss during the regular season, but you can never count your chickens before they hatch in Quebec high school football. Meanwhile Charles-Lemoyne are preparing for a slugfest with College Bourget, who were able to correct their wrongs from the season finale and enact their revenge against Cure-Antoine-Labelle with a 49-14 thrashing in the quarterfinals. Only one score separated these two in their first meeting with the Dynamique walking away with a 36-29 win, and they have definitely been the more consistent team throughout the campaign, but if the Voltigeurs can put all the pieces together there’s no reason why they can’t punch their ticket to the championship.
- We’re down to the final two in New Brunswick in what’s been a highly competitive season with plenty of twists and turns. In one corner we’ve got Saint John, who are coming off a 33-8 victory against Moncton, and in the other corner we’ve got Riverview, who were able to lockdown their spot in the finals with a 19-9 win over St. Malachy’s Memorial. This will be the third straight provincial final for Riverview, and they’ll be hoping to get back on the right side of the championship celebrations with their third banner in four years after falling to Tantramar last season. On the other side, Saint John make their return to the championship game after going back-to-back where they split the difference with a win over Kennebecasis in 2021, and a loss to Riverview in 2022. We thought maybe it’d be back to the status quo with Tantramar winning again last year after running the table with five straight titles from 2015-2019 before the pandemic hit, but these two programs have proven that the culture they’ve built since then is battle tested, and they’re creating a winning legacy of their own. Now we just have to wait and see which program ends up on top this time around.

CFC60 JUVENILE RANKINGS
- Heading to Ontario for a run of headlines now where the numbers keep dwindling as OFSAA rapidly approaches. The TVRA championship is set in London with Catholic Central coasting to another dominant 35-0 victory against South in the semifinals, while on the other side St. Andre Bessette are making their first appearance on the rankings this year after finding a way to get the job done against Medway with a 20-16 victory. It’s no secret they’re going to be deep in the trenches going up against Catholic Central, who handed St. Andre Bessette their only loss of the season by a score of 35-0, and have only allowed 18 points all year, but we aren’t ready to count out any program who makes it to the championship game in one of the toughest leagues in Canada. The winner will snag a coveted spot at the OFSAA Bowl Series, but against who is the burning question. We anticipate that OFSAA will be announcing the matchups sometime this week, and that’s when the real fun begins.
- It’s the rematch we know Westmount have been dreaming about since they dropped their regular season contest against Westdale. They’ll get another bite at the apple after defeating Waterdown 20-0 to book their spot in the Hamilton public finals. They’re going to have to throw the kitchen sink and anything else they can get their hands on to defeat the Warriors, who made their intentions loud and clear in the other semifinal with a 45-0 blowout over Saltfleet. The first matchup ended up with Westdale on top 39-14, but Westmount will be hoping it looks a lot more like last year’s championship bout where the Wildcats walked away with the 14-0 victory. Either way, both of these teams have earned the chance to dance at the SOSSA playdowns this year with Westmount set to host the semifinals against the winners from the Niagara leagues.
- Speaking of the Niagara leagues, we already know who one of the participants will be after Notre Dame left no doubt with their 28-2 victory over Blessed Trinity to bring home another Niagara catholic league title. Now we just have to wait and see who prevails on the public side where A.N. Myer prepare to take on Sir Winston Churchill in a championship rematch. On paper it looks like A.N. Myer should have no troubles, but that was the exact same thing we thought last year before the Bulldogs pulled off what was the upset of the year. You know the Marauders remember that loss all to well, and will be looking to set the record straight this time around.

CFC40 NFL/CFL DRAFT RANKINGS
- What just happened in Guelph? One upset in the semifinals? Sure that happens. But two? It was a wild week with both of our ranked programs from District 10 watching their seasons end with St. James defeating the defending champs Centennial 15-8, and John F. Ross getting the better of undefeated top seed Bishop McDonell in a 28-24 nail biter. This is why you play the games, and this is why we we’re addicted to high school football in Canada. We love when the rankings get busted in November, and can’t wait to see which one of these underdogs get the privilege of hoisting the District 10 banner and representing their league at the CWOSSA playdowns.
- We’ve got two juicy rematches in Halton on both sides of the divider with Assumption looking to prove the first round wasn’t a fluke against Corpus Christi in the catholic finals, while Nelson will be looking to correct the record against Georgetown after the 87’s pulled off the upset last season. Assumption and Corpus Christi have already secured their golden ticket to the GHAC semifinals with the HCAA getting two bids this year, while the winner between Nelson and Georgetown will earn the right to play the winner from the catholic finals. The loser will move on to play the winner out of the Hamilton catholic league, where we will get a rematch between Bishop Ryan and Bishop Tonnos as the Celtics look to complete their Cinderella run with another victory over the Titans to cap off an undefeated campaign in the Hammer.
- We’ve got a new champion in ROPSSAA with Robert F. Hall pitching a 17-0 shutout against David Suzuki to claim their first ever Tier I title. It’s a beautiful redemption story for the Wolf Pack, who had their championship dreams dashed last year at the hands of St. Roch, but their perseverance and dedication has paid off with a trip to the OFSAA Bowl Series on the horizon. Now all they have to do is sit back and wait to find out who their final opponent will be in Guelph.
RECRUITING TIPS
- Sparks will fly, and there will be tears, but we don’t know on which side of the rivalry yet with W.F. Herman and Holy Names ready to write another chapter in Windsor. The first time these two met during the regular season it was a battle to the end with Herman landing the last punch to take home the 21-14 victory. The Green Griffins have also come out on top in the last two WECSSAA finals against the Knights, but if you’ve read the book between these two, then you know you can never look to the past to predict the future because anyone can win when these two meet between the white lines.
- Are you still with us? We appreciate those who made it through this wall of text. Our last headline of the week is that the playoffs are finally set to kickoff in British Columbia with a 16 team bracket that promises to provide all the drama we crave as high school football fans. None of our CFC50 programs have been pitted against each other in the first round, but if they can all manage to escape unscathed, next week will be complete carnage. We’ve got potential for quarterfinals matchups between Robert Bateman and Vancouver College, W.J. Mouat and New Westminster, South Delta and Centennial, then lastly Lord Tweedsmuir and St. Thomas More. Once again we must reiterate, that’s if everyone takes care of business, and that’s a lot to ask when you’ve got eight other hungry programs ready to spoil the party.
