CFC50 Rankings Week 13: New champions crowned in Alberta

There’s only one week left of high school football action in Canada to settle all the debates.

The Titans of Alberta football finally met their match. Harry Ainlay won three of the past four titles, but they were no match for the red hot Raymond Comets who left no doubt about who the best team in Alberta was this season with a dominant 34-15 victory to take home their first Tier I provincial championship since 2010. It was a fitting end to the season for Raymond, who opened the year with a 25-15 loss to Harry Ainlay, but were able to correct their mistakes and grow stronger with every game on the schedule until finally reaching the summit. The only other blemish on their record was a 34-34 tie with Ernest Manning in their third game of the season, and once again they were able to exorcise those demons en route to the provincial finals by hammering the Griffins 48-6 in the semifinals. This could be the beginning of another golden age of Tier I dominance for the Comets, who won three straight provincial banners from 2008-2010 before losing to – you guessed it – Harry Ainlay in the 2011 title fight. Funny how life comes full circle eventually.

We now flip our attention to Pacific coast where the final four went to battle at BC Place over the weekend. We wish we could report some shocking results, but it was destined to be Vancouver College and G.W. Graham going to war in the provincial finals. The Grizzlies found themselves in another dog fight going into halftime down 10-3 after a pick-six by St. Thomas More, but the defending champions weren’t ready to bow out yet with a stunning second half performance that saw them pull away in the fourth quarter to secure a 27-10 victory. The Fighting Irish saw no need for the dramatics cruising to a 41-20 victory over Carson Graham, and will now be looking to reclaim the provincial title from G.W. Graham this weekend. Vancouver College won their last championship in 2019, then the 2020 season was wiped out by COVID-19, which led the way to G.W. Graham capturing their first ever provincial banner. Will it be the old-guard who prevails? Or will the new kids on the block rule the streets once again? This game has the makings of a classic showdown with Vancouver College taking their regular season matchup in a close knit battle that ended 28-23.

We finish off in Ontario where the OFSAA Festival got underway this morning at the University of Guelph. We begin in the home region where Jacob Hespeler outscored Resurrection in the CWOSSA finals in a wild 55-35 contest to secure their spot in the Northern Bowl against Korah. It should be a fantastic matchup with Korah searching for their fourth straight OFSAA bowl victory, while Hespeler will be hoping to bring home their second OFSAA banner. Since the games are being held in Guelph, CWOSSA got two seeds this year which means the Phoenix get to rise one more time with Resurrection heading to the Metro Bowl against Chaminade College later tonight.

Lastly we had to decide the Golden Horseshoe Bowl featuring the winners out of SOSSA and GHAC. A.N. Myer have been a team on a mission this season, and they’ve added one more task to complete at OFSAA after getting the job done against Westmount with a 21-18 victory in the SOSSA Finals. On the other side of the field they’ll be facing Bishop Tonnos, who continued their magical run with a 28-14 win over S.J.H. Newman in the GHAC Finals. This will be the first bowl appearance by A.N. Myer since they won three straight from 2014-2016, while Bishop Tonnos will be looking to write the perfect ending to their fairytale season with a victory in their first trip to an OFSAA bowl game in school history.

Will we have a new number one ranked team at the end of the season? All to play for with just ten games remaining in what’s been another dramatic season of high school football in Canada.
