CFC50 Rankings Week 7: Wild results in Quebec reimagine the top 25

Another week of high school football across Canada is in the books, and like clockwork we’ve got another top ten shakeup.

Quebec might be located on the Eastern side of the country, but it truly is the Wild West of football. After watching Seminaire-Saint-Francois drop out of the top ten with their first loss of the season to Academie Saint-Louis last week, we had a feeling they’d be back with a vengeance, and they delivered by repaying the favour to former top ten program Charles-Lemoyne in a thrilling 17-14 victory. The two programs sit tied atop the standings at 6-1 with two games remaining in the regular season campaign, but the Blizzard now own the tiebreaker which could provide a pivotal bye week in the first round of the playoffs. Any week off would be a blessing with turbulence running rampant throughout the division, and it hit Academie-Saint-Louis the hardest who couldn’t manage to capture the momentum from their dominant display against Saint-Francois. Instead it was Armand-Corbeil who jumped into third place with a 21-16 victory over the Arsenal, and now they’ll be looking to climb the standings once again this week with a big matchup against Saint-Francois. We’ve said it before and it’s worth saying again, the field is wide open in Quebec this year with the playoffs on the horizon, and we can’t wait to see who emerges at the top of the pile with the Bol d’Or raised high above their heads.

BC is another province where you can’t get caught napping against any opponents, and this week it was St. Thomas More and Notre Dame who seized the moment with a pair of key victories. St. Thomas More were able to get the best of last year’s runner-up Terry Fox in a 21-16 triumph, while Notre Dame had a big bounce back victory over Mt. Douglas prevailing 29-26 in a game that could’ve gone either way. In other action Carson Graham were able to keep their winning streak alive with a close 22-14 victory over South Delta, and now they’ll face their biggest test so far with an impending showdown against undefeated Vancouver College, who we’ve got currently marked as the top team in BC this season. If we’ve learned anything so far, expect another hotly contested matchup with the Eagles looking to prove they belong in the conversation of best around at the AAA Varsity level.

From one chaotic region to another, we now head to Alberta where we saw a big matchup between St. Francis and Ernest Manning end in a 10-10 tie. You don’t see many deadlocks at any level of football, but this marks the second draw this season for Ernest Manning, who also managed to pull even with Raymond in a dramatic 34-34 contest earlier this year. This sets up a very intriguing finish to the regular season in Calgary with Ernest Manning looking to find a way to defeat Notre Dame this week to earn the first seed come playoff time. It’s not going to be easy with Notre Dame coming off a commanding 41-27 win over St. Francis two weeks ago, and they’ll be feeling fresh after catching a breather during the bye. Regardless of the end result, it’s been a joy to watch the three team race in Cowtown, and there’s no predicting who will ultimately end up on top. Across the province in Edmonton we nearly caught an upset with Austin O’Brien leaving everything on the field against top five ranked Salisbury, but unfortunately they fell shy of the mark falling 29-20 in a hard-fought battle. Now it’s time for an annual matchup everyone looks forward to across the country with Salisbury taking on Harry Ainlay in the regular season finale, which is guaranteed to shakeup the top ten once again.

CFC100 CLASS OF 2024 RANKINGS

We had more theatrics in Ontario where programs are still sorting out who the top dogs will be come OFSAA time. It’s been a wild couple of weeks in Hamilton, and St. Thomas More wrote another chapter in their storied rivalry with S.J.H. Newman who once again found themselves on the wrong side of the storyline with the Knights running away with a 40-5 victory. St. Thomas More suffered a heartbreaker against Bishop Ryan a couple weeks ago, but a commanding victory over the Cardinals could be the confidence boost they needed as we race towards the playoffs.

Elsewhere in Ontario we had a pair of ranked programs fall with Garth Webb making a claim for the best around in Halton Public with a 16-14 victory over Iroquois Ridge, and Centennial Collegiate asserting themselves in Guelph by remaining undefeated with their 21-10 victory over Bishop Macdonell. The results also made way for another undefeated team to make their first appearance on the list as St. John’s completed a flawless campaign in Brantford with their 23-0 win over North Park, and will now be looking to keep their perfect run alive in the playoffs.

Lastly we wrap up this week’s coverage in Manitoba who provided a couple tightly contested matchups as always with Vincent Massey nearly taking down top ranked St. Paul’s, but fell short of the mark in a 14-10 defeat, while Dakota did enough to remain in second place with a 16-3 win over Grant Park. We’ve got one for showdown in a couple of weeks between St. Paul’s and Dakota in the regular season finale, which will likely determine first place going into the postseason.

Speaking of postseason, it’s time for the real fun to begin in Saskatchewan next week where Miller, Riffel, St. Joseph’s and Holy Cross have all earned themselves a first round bye in Regina and Saskatoon, but they can’t afford any complacency with their rivals looking to capitalize when it matters the most.
