BISONS FALL TO HAMILTON 39-14

The Brantford Bisons fell to 2-1 on the season with a 39-14 loss to the Hamilton Hurricanes on Friday night

The Bisons played a tremendous first half with an energy that caught the Hurricanes off guard. The defense played with a sense of urgency that limited the high octane Hurricane offense to a single point in the first quarter. The offense could not gain much on the ground in the first quarter but quarterback Matt Krason made up for the lack of a ground game by hitting timely passes to receivers Raymond Martino and Andre Toic which included a TD pass to Toic for the first points the Hurricanes have given up all season. The Bisons ground game was finally successful in the second quarter when runningback, Tristen Almas, broke free on a 70 yard dash that led to a touchdown which was in response to a Hurricane touchdown and field goal of their own as the half ended with the Bisons leading 14-11.

The second half did not start well for the Bisons when their offensive workhorse, Almas, and leading tackler, safety Ben Crocock could not play for the entire second half. Even worse, the Hurricanes scored a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage, a 64 yard run that gave them their first lead of the game,18-14. The momentum continued to swing towards the Hurricanes for the rest of the game which used their ground game to wear down the Bisons defense. By the end of the game, the Hurricanes scored 28 unanswered points in the second half for a 39-14 victory.

ā€œThe team played a great first half and showed that we can compete with anyone in the league. We just have to play a complete game for a full 60 minutes. Tomorrow is a new day in which we will work hard at practice to get ready for another tough opponent, the Burlington Stampeders.ā€ said Kelly Ireland, head coach of the Bisons.

The Bisons will now prepare for their home opener on Friday, June 12th against the Burlington Stampeders at Bisons Alumni field. Kickoff is scheduled for 8pm with the Bisons hosting theĀ  ā€œPunt for Parkinsonā€™sā€ event at half time to increase awareness in regards to Parkinsonā€™s disease.

In other action, the Bisons bantam team lost to the Hamilton Hurricanes 53-34 to fall 0-3 for the season. Statistics were not available at press time.

GUELPH JR GRYPHONS 39, CHATHAM KENT COUGARS 9:

RECAP BY ANDREW HARVEY

The Chatham-Kent Cougars Varsity team lost to Guelph 39-9.

Offense and defense were solid, but a weak 2nd quarter and poor special teams play contributed to the defeat.

Kelton Evans gave the team a spark in the 4th quarter with a drive that was mainly throwing where Baylis caught a few long passes to setup a deep pass to Jake Anderson for a TD.Ā Ā Defense played a bend but didn’t break game.

Have many 2 and outs, many QB hurries and sacks and kept the running game in check.Ā Ā Carter wood had 2 sacks, Josh Kita had another 2, Valihora had 1 sack, and Josh Graham had 1 interception.Ā Ā Penney, Jake Lindley, Josh Kita, Kenny Levesque, and Rick O’Rourke lead the team in tackles.
