CFC50 High School Rankings WEEK 8: There will be a new King in Saskatchewan

TOP HEADLINES

  • This is why we love playoff football. You only need one game to change the entire narrative of your season, and LeBoldus are the latest example of perseverance after bringing an end to Miller’s march for four straight Saskatchewan 6A Provincial titles. LeBoldus finished the regular season 1-4, but that record meant nothing once they lined up against Miller, and through pure will and determination they were able to battle their way to a 17-12 semifinals victory. It’s hard to believe the Golden Suns will be competing for the city title after a rocky start to the season saw them lose 47-7 against Riffel, and 43-14 against Campbell, but slowly they’ve been improving each week before finally putting all the pieces together to slay the Marauders dragon in one of the biggest upsets in recent memory across Canada. But you know what’s better than one upset? How about two? Because their opponent in the Regina city finals will be the Campbell Tartans, who after knocking on the door all year long finally broke through at the perfect time to knock off Riffel 22-14 to secure their spot in the championship. These two programs met in the season finale where Campbell prevailed for the second time against LeBoldus, but it wasn’t so easy the second time around with the Suns only falling by a single score 33-26. Now the only question left to answer is who does the slipper fit with a spot in the Saskatchewan 6A Provincial finals hanging in the balance? On the other side of the province, it’s no surprise that Holy Cross and St. Joseph will line up for the third time this season with the Saskatoon 6A City title on the line. Holy Cross prevailed in their first two contests, but they say the hardest thing to do in football is beat a team three times in one season. We are about to find out if that myth holds any weight in Saskatoon.

CFC100 CLASS 2026 RANKINGS

  • On paper it looked like it could turn into a barn burner, but Corpus Christi wasn’t interested in any drama as they handily defeated Notre Dame 37-7 to secure the top seed in the Halton Catholic League going into the playoffs. They still have one more regular season test against Holy Trinity before playoff time, but right now it’s looking like the Longhorns are the favourites to repeat as the GHAC regional champs again in 2024. With that said, the road is never easy through GHAC with Bishop Tonnos completing another perfect regular season campaign in the Hamilton Catholic League despite some turbulence along the way courtesy of St. Thomas More and Bishop Ryan, meanwhile nobody has been able sniff victory against Nelson in the Halton Public League with the Lords sitting pretty at 6-0 going into the final week of regular season action. The Hamilton Catholic League playoffs could provide the drama we are looking for this week with Bishop Tonnos taking on Bishop Ryan, and St. Thomas More going back-to-back with their rivals from Newman after downing the Cardinals 24-3 this past week.

CFC STAR RANKINGS DATABASE

  • Elsewhere in Ontario, we’ve crowned our first champions as Korah completed their mission to reclaim the Sault Ste. Marie city title with a decisive 42-13 victory over St. Mary’s in the finals. You never know after an off year if a program will be able to bounce back, or if the cycle has simply passed them by, but Korah once again have proven they are one of the best run programs from top to bottom across Canada claiming their 6th city title in 7 seasons. They now turn their attention to returning to the OFSAA Bowl Series, but first they’ll need to settle business in the NOSSA playdowns against the winners out of Sudbury and North Bay.
  • We don’t think there’s ever been a season like this in Quebec, where seemingly nobody is safe and there is no clear favourite heading into the playoffs. With the regular season in the books, the final standings look like this: Cure-Antoine-Labelle (6-2), Saint-Jean-Eudes (6-2), Charles-Lemoyne (5-3), Saint-Francois (3-5), College Notre-Dame (3-5), Saint-Louis (3-5), Armand-Corbeil (3-5) and College Bourget (3-5). College Bourget drew the short end of the stick and will miss the playoffs, but they’ve also got a win against Charles-Lemoyne on their resume, meanwhile Cure-Antoine-Labelle’s two losses came against Saint-Francois and College Notre-Dame, which should tell you everything you need to know about the parity this year. The quarterfinals should be filled full of theatrics with Saint-Francois facing off against College Notre-Dame, Saint-Louis locking horns with Charles-Lemoyne, and Armand-Corbeil battling Saint-Jean-Eudes while Cure-Antoine-Labelle get some much needed rest with a first round bye.

  • Playoffs are in full swing in Manitoba and Alberta, but we haven’t witnessed any upsets yet that would cause a ripple effect through the rankings. In Alberta, Harry Ainlay will be taking on Spruce Grove in the Edmonton Metro Carr Conference finals, while on the other side of the province in Calgary we will see Notre Dame taking on the reigning Tier I Provincial champions Ernest Manning in one semifinal, and on the other side of the bracket St. Francis prepare to take on Henry Wise Wood. We’ve also got an epic showdown in the 5A South Zone Championship between storied rivals Raymond and Lethbridge CI, who always bring the best out of each other whenever they meet between the white lines. Our final stop in Alberta features the Central Alberta League championship bout, where newly ranked Notre Dame (Red Deer) look to keep their unbeaten streak alive with a tough matchup against CFC25 ranked Hunting Hills. In Manitoba, the ANAVETS Bowl semifinals are set with Dakota taking on Grant Park, and Oak Park facing off against St. Paul’s. If Grant Park or St. Paul’s need any inspiration, they can look to LeBoldus who have proven to the rest of the country that every dog has their day, and past results mean nothing once the ball is kicked off.
  • Lastly we take a quick look at British Columbia where G.W. Graham make their first appearance on the rankings this year after taking down Rutland 18-13. It was the second straight loss for the Thunder, who will be looking to gather some momentum in their season finale against their local rivals Kelowna SS before playing the spoiler role in the AAA Varsity playoff bracket.
